What is the importance of Dialysis?

Cases of kidney failure are on the rise. The worst thing about kidney failure is that the kidney stops purifying our blood. According to Dr. Deveshwar Pandey, Medical Specialist at Shri Balmukand Apex Hospital (Solan),the purification of blood is essential because it helps to filter/ separate harmful toxins from the blood, which if not removed, can harm other organs of the body as well. The purified & filtered blood is then re circulated in the body.
When the purification cannot be carried out naturally by the kidney(s), the importance of Dialysis is easily understood.

Predominant Advantage

The bonus point about Dialysis is that it does not only perform the function of elimination of toxins from the body, but also helps the patient by getting rid of excessive fluid from the body.
Dialysis also aids at sustaining the chemical balance in the body, which is the preeminent function of the kidneys.

Main Motive

Dialysis helps people to live a longer life after the kidney fails. But it is relevant to mention here that when Dialysis is performed at regular intervals, then it must be accompanied by medications as well.

Which patients require Dialysis?

A patient who is afflicted with CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) and has reached the last stage, then that condition is known as:

  • - Kidney failure
  • - Stage 5 Kidney Disease.
In this condition the patient needs to take up Dialysis, which prevents the build-up of waste/ toxic material in escalated levels in the body.

What is the mechanism of Dialysis?

Dialysis executes the task of eliminating harmful toxins from the body via semi-permeable membranes. There are two kinds of Dialysis which use completely different processes to purify the blood, as below:

Hemo dialysis

The filtering membrane, particularly known as the Dialyzer, is placed inside the Dialysis machine. The strategy involves the filtering of the blood in the machine and then the same is re circulated back in the body after filtration. This Dialysis makes use of a solution known as Dialysate that aims at terminating unwanted and unrequired elements from the bloodstream

Peritoneal dialysis

The filtering membrane is the natural lining of the peritoneum of the abdomen. This strategy involves the filtering of the blood in the body itself, without the need for any external source. This Dialysis too makes use of a solution known as Dialysate that aims at terminating unwanted and unrequired elements from the bloodstream
